The Oklahoma Department of Education Announces New Suite of Teacher Certification Tests and Free Preparation
June 1, 2022
OKLAHOMA CITY (June 1, 2022) – The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) announced today that nearly four dozen Praxis® assessments, that include free test preparation resources, will now be available to provide a new pathway to professional licensure for prospective teachers and current teachers who are seeking additional certifications.
The 44 Praxis subject assessments will offer a comparable alternative to the Oklahoma Subject Area Tests (OSATs) for teaching candidates. Upon successful completion of any Praxis test, an educator will become fully certified in the respective test subject area and be able to bring their content knowledge into Oklahoma’s classrooms to provide quality education for students. Every test taker who registers for a Praxis test will receive the benefit of access to free test preparation resources that include interactive practice tests, study plans and companions, and other preparation materials.
“This new suite of assessments not only ensures prospective teachers have demonstrated mastery of the subjects they will be assigned to teach — but also provides a plethora of free resources to aid test takers,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister. “We welcome any option that gets certified teachers into our classrooms without delay and helps retain teachers who may be interested in broadening the scope of classes they are able to teach. The availability of these tests is a win-win for teachers and kids.”
“Oklahoma is making nearly four dozen key Praxis tests available to provide Oklahoma’s future educators with choice in how they attain professional certification,” said ETS Praxis Executive Director Jason Carter. “This choice is opening the doors of Oklahoma’s classrooms to new educators, while also supporting the growth of teachers already leading our students. Praxis is delivering new and innovative opportunities to Oklahoma to increase the state’s teaching workforce and to ensure quality education for every student.”
The newly available Praxis assessments will provide the state, and education preparation programs, with the ability to compare the performance of Oklahoma teacher candidates to candidates around the country. The current certifications are specific to Oklahoma and do not allow for comparison of candidates in other states because they have not taken Oklahoma’s test. The Praxis certification also is portable, making it easier for teachers who have successfully passed these certifications in other states to come to Oklahoma to teach.
Under Oklahoma law, the state can certify individuals who have successfully completed a competency assessment that is being used in a majority of other states like Praxis exams that are used in teacher certification programs across the nation.
Praxis test takers will also have the choice to test at home with the support of a human proctor or at an approved testing center. For more information on the Praxis assessments, click here. For information on teacher certification in Oklahoma, visit the OSDE Teacher Certification webpage.
